For this pixilation task I wanted to use the idea of some kind of daily routine. When I was thinking of what parts of the day I could include I decided to use a student as a starting point and went through many ideas. I wanted to include getting out of bed and then back into bed to start/finish the film so there was a solid ending with easy reasoning behind it. As it was based on a day in the life of a student I went through the ideas of including a couple of meals, a lecture, doing work, socialising and drinking in the evening.
I then started to think of effects or styles I wanted to use throughout my film and which of the daily routine tasks would fit in well. I decided I wanted to involve stationary objects and either make them move or become something real. While thinking of how to do this I came across the idea of having the student getting dressed but her clothes being put in place and dressing before she’s actually wearing them. I could then have a quick change from an empty outfit to a person then wearing it. I feel this scene worked well and when editing the film with the music I was able to place the clothes and the girl in time with the song. As my film was based on students I knew there would have to be drinking at some point and had the idea of a having the camera swaying/moving less steadily than before so it looked like they were stumbling. However, after seeing a few examples of pixilation films in the lecture, I used the idea of the person moving along the floor and making it seem like they’d passed out. I wanted my film to be slightly abstract so for some scenes like the eating cereal, eating pizza, and drinking alcohol I had the food/drink appearing by itself and the people in the film not having any influence over it or moving it.
After I had finalised my ideas and the story that my film would be following, I started with the photos. I took just over 300 photos in total and then edited these using Photoshop to create an interesting look to my film. I decided I wanted it to look a bit arty and was planning on including some drawings to help make the move from one scene to another smoother. However, the look I ended up with using Photoshop wasn’t as sketchy looking as I wanted it to be so I decided the drawings wouldn’t fit in as well as I’d hoped. To overcome this I used the layers in Photoshop to create the smoother scene changes instead. Two of my scene changes were quite similar with a sort of scribbling/drawing affect over the top of one photo to start to reveal the next one. The third change was a bit different and using layers I rotated a couple of photos on top of each other changing the opacity so that we were then left with the starting photo for the next scene. I liked these changes and feel it makes my film work and flow better.
I found Premier quite hard to use but learnt to use the basic aspects of it. I chose my song to go alongside with my film and imported them both into premier. I played with the timing of the scenes, cut and pasted photos to make bits longer or shorter and added in some credits to finish off my film. I left the timing of the music as it was and just cut off the beginning and end of the song which I didn’t need. By altering just the sequences/photos I was able to time it all in well and make the music and film fit in time with each other. Overall, I think my film works well and if I were to improve it next time I would play around with Photoshop to see if I could make it look sketchier so I would be able to add in drawings. However, the effects I used in Photoshop in place of the drawings I feel worked well too.
