Second Life

I have decided this will be my last post on Second Life and instead of going on the programme I have decided to see if I can find some useful articles about it. So far I have found each time on Second Life to be quite pointless and it has not been of much use. I’m not too sure why the programme has so many users and have no idea why I never seem to see anybody. The overall programme was slow to load and crashed many times when I was using it. A lot of other people I have spoken to have had this problem too.

After hearing that they were discussing Second Life on Radio 1 I searched the website to see if they had useful articles on the topic.
I came across this one http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/newsenglish/witn/2007/09/070905_second_life.shtml
In this article they discuss the problems with the programme and how they are planning to improve to increase its popularity. I thought this was quite good as the creator had identified that the programme had a lot of flaws. They also spoke about how businesses use it for things like meetings, selling products and recruiting. This made me think that maybe some people do actually find the programme useful and carried on looking for more articles to see if more people had uses for Second Life.

I found this article quite interesting http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/ouch/2007/05/virtual_disability_nightclub.html
It spoke about disabled people using it so that they could freely roam around the world without their disability. In one way I think this is quite nice for them as they can explore in a way that they can’t in the real world. However, at the end it said “I need never leave the house again” which made me think that disabled people could become addicted to this kind of freedom and become anti-social in the real world. There’s so much in the real world to help the disabled people to get around now that they don’t really need to explore the world in a virtual way but can physically visit places of interest themselves.

So that Second Life was not a complete waste of my time I have been thinking about what I have learnt and could use to help me with my box/showcase. The only good thing I thought that could come out of this programme was the ability to create your avatar and be a completely different person able to explore the world and speak to people with more confidence. However, I feel that people to should learn to be confident enough to go places they want to go and make friends in the real world rather than a virtual one. To reflect this I am planning to make my avatar a puppet on strings. This will fit in with my theatre theme but also show what I have learnt from Second Life. I am going to create my avatar not looking particularly like myself but have it surrounded by items important to be and photos of my friends and family. This will represent the fact that you can act like a different person but will only ever be yourself.

Day 25 – Wednesday 21st January 10.45am

So I haven’t been on Second Life in ages because I really don’t find it interesting and it’s not been working properly. Today’s been the first day in a couple of weeks since I have tried it and have actually been teleported to somewhere I can explore. What had been happening was I would search for somewhere on the map and teleport there but always be stuck between 2 objects and not be able to move. I don’t really understand why because everytime I teleported it would be the same and I would never be able to explore somewhere.
I found somewhere I was able to use a motorboat for free and sail around the different small islands. It was a lot faster than walking or flying but sometimes I would get stuck and not be able to sail anymore as the area was out of bounds. As everywhere looked the same it was difficult to find where I was and get back to the main Island.
There was no warning about when I was unable to go any further and my boat was simply stop and get stuck in the corner between the imaginary block and an island.

One of the islands I found had quite a strange house and one of the options downstairs was to kiss and you could do this even if there was only one person.
Upstairs I found a couple of sex toy type things which was really strange.

Again I saw no other people at all so could not talk to anyone.

Day 6 – Friday 2nd January 5.23pm

I found a snowboard park which I initially thought looked quite interesting. When I first arrived there it was quite a lot of things and it looked like there was going to be lots to do. I was completely wrong and I couldn’t see much to do. The snowman looked fun but it didn’t do anything.
I did find a ski lift but was disappointed when there was nothing to do at the top. Second Life crashed while I was here and I had to teleport to a few locations before it started working again.I managed to find Hyde Park and a message said to collect free gifts from the rubbish bins. I had a look in some of the bins but ended up getting stuck inside.I found the ice rink which I had actually skated at the other day but couldnt work out the free skates so wasn’t able to skate. Second Life crashed again and I couldn’t get it to start working again so I’ll have to leave it for another day.

Day 2 – Monday 29th December 1.36pm

I gave Second Life another go and sat down for a bit longer than I had been so I could explore it properly. I didn’t really understand how you were meant to know where to go to and I had no idea of any place names so I type in mountains hoping somewhere would come up. I found some nice areas which had interesting features like rainbows and a toadstool house. However, there were parts that I kept getting warnings about saying I wasn’t allowed there and they would have to make me leave. I didn’t understand how I was allowed there in the first place as other areas had red bars stopping you from entering certain parts. The place I looked at was quite unrealistic and looked slightly magical. There was a fairy you could click on and it would say nice things to you but there wasn’t much else to do in this area.

There were a couple of swings which I went on but it seemed there was more to do which it wasn’t letting me. It looked like there were buttons inside the tree house that I was unable to click so I was a bit disappointed with that.

I then saw some animals wondering around and you could stop and pet them. This was quite nice as again I had seen no one wondering around at all so it was quite dull and I had nothing to do. I thought it was quite funny how it took ages for the colours of the animals to load up after they moved a substantial amount. After another day I still don’t like Second Life and am hoping it will get a bit more interesting the more I look at it.

Day 2 – Monday 29th December 10.43am

<!–[if gte mso 9]> Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 <![endif]–><!–[if gte mso 9]> <![endif]–> <!–[if gte mso 10]> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:”Table Normal”; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:”"; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin-top:0cm; mso-para-margin-right:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:10.0pt; mso-para-margin-left:0cm; line-height:115%; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:”Calibri”,”sans-serif”; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:”Times New Roman”; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;} <![endif]–>

I managed to work out how to go to different locations so I could explore some new places. I found there wasn’t much to do and all I could do was make my avatar danced in an empty bar. I saw no other people at all. It was quite strange how empty everywhere was and how limited the things you could do were. I didn’t like how the edges of each area were blocked so you had to stay in that place.

Day 1 – Sunday 28th December 2.18pm

<!–[if gte mso 9]> Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 <![endif]–><!–[if gte mso 9]> <![endif]–> <!–[if gte mso 10]> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:”Table Normal”; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:”"; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin-top:0cm; mso-para-margin-right:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:10.0pt; mso-para-margin-left:0cm; line-height:115%; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:”Calibri”,”sans-serif”; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:”Times New Roman”; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;} <![endif]–>

Today I downloaded Second Life and created my own avatar. I found it quite confusing and didn’t really know what to do. I wondered round a bit and someone started talking to me. It was their first time as well so we couldn’t really help each other. It was weird talking to some random person and I didn’t know what to say and we went off in different directions. I walked around a bit and collected some free stuff but was a bit confused as to where else I could go and what I could do. I found it very boring so didn’t spend long on there at all.
