For my 6th artefact I decided to make improvements on the feedback I received for artefact 5.

Artefact 5
For this artefact I looked more into reactions. The sound clip is taken from the recent disneyland adverts.
Client Project Animation
Finally finished my client project animation after lots of hard work and stress. There were many problems throughout the project that I had to solve and there are still things which could be improved but overall i am quite pleased with it. I think more time could have been spent improving the piece but I think it’s always hard to stop as I can always find new things to improve. Glad the project is finished and it may be something i come back to later on but for now I am pleased with the submission and am hoping to do well.
Client Project Animation Progress
Here is the progress I have been making with my client project animation. It’s starting to take shape, some parts are still missing but are being worked on.
Client Project Blocking
I’ve started blocking out my client project animation. Some sections are currently still missing and the environment is only basic at the moment and a lot of work needs to be done to that. I’ve been planning out the timing and camera angles before I put in the final details of the animation and make the environment.
Artefact 4
This artefact has more physical action than my previous 3 and explores how thoughts can be portrayed through body movements. The aim is to see see what people think about the characters and what type of person they are. I will be asking them particularly to look at the man and decide what his thoughts are and what impression of himself he is trying to give to the girl.
I have already noticed some problems with this artefact but I will see what my peers say about it. I think the main problem I have noticed so far is that most thoughts are shown through the persons face and because I am trying to show 2 characters I am having to position the camera quite far from the face so small details are missed. I don’t want to take away from the animation so I didn’t want to animate the camera and edit different shots and angles together. I will see what response is given and move on from there to develop my next artefact.
Artefact 2
Developing on from my first artefact I decided to try and concentrate on the same aspects but allow myself to choose the movements involved. Rather than using a scene from a film and simply copying it, I decided what I wanted to do and then found clips which were similar and recorded myself doing the actual actions I was after. Using this mixture of reference material I was able to complete a piece of animation which was completely mine. I found this more challenging and did leave it til last minute so I feel it could be much better. However, I still think I was able to breathe life into this character.
One thing I was really pleased about with my first artefact was that people were able to guess what the situation within the animation was. I wanted to develop this further whilst also looking at the concept of ‘inner dialogue’ which I wrote about in my research document. I thought a telephone conversation would be an interesting way to do this because it concentrates completely on displaying the story and emotions through the reactions of my character rather thanĀ the actions they are doing. I am hoping that people will be able to guess the type of conversation that my character is having and how they are feeling.
Artefact 1 Final – What makes a character look like they are thinking….
For my first artefact I have decided to use a short clip from a film and recreate it so that I can notice the small movements that people make to suggest they are thinking. The film I am using is Burn After Reading, at aboutĀ 20 minutes in. I have used techniques highlighted within my research document to help ensure this piece of animation is successful:
- Reference material (the film)
- Animate thoughts rather than dialogue (there is no dialogue in this piece therefore only thoughts could be used anyway)
- Examining each part of the body and building up layer by layer (Body then eyes then face then refining all the movements)
Here is a sequence showing how I built up different layers of my animation adding in more and more detail as I went. It is then followed by the final pass without all the build up.
Artefact 1 Work in Progress – What makes a character look like they are thinking…
This is the first pass where I worked just on the hip movement to give the illusion of the female character walking.
In the following videos I have built up layers of the body moving. All of these are work in progress.
Finished Simulated Client Project!
I think I’m finished with this project, I’m really pleased with how this has turned out. Some aspects of this could be improved but I feel they are all techniques which will come with practise. I may work on this piece of animation more to get it a bit more flowing but I don’t think it will be worth me trying to do this in time for the submission
