Practising Material Textures

http://www.cglearn.com/tutorials/max3/11_materials_still_life_pt_1.html

I used the above tutorial to practise textures, especially glass and reflection in order to help with my idea for my Rollercoaster for Visualisation. I’ll be putting ideas up for that soon so the relevance will become apparent. In the tutorial I was given the models and the files used for the textures and just had to alter the materials.

I created the above render but decided to do a bit more work on the individual objects as the colours felt a bit flat. I wanted to add more gloss and reflection to the apple in order to bring out the colour and make it a bit more realistic.

I added a bump map to the orange in order to create a more uneven surface and also changed the colour to make it a bit more realistic.

I added reflection, refraction, glossiness and bump maps in order to get the textures. The label on the wine still needs some work on but I’ve learnt what I need to from the tutorial so I don’t feel I need to work anymore on it. I will try and apply these techniques to my own work and replicate what I have produced here.

I am quite pleased with the overall outcome and feel that these techniques could prove to be very useful in my visualisation project in order to make my environment and rollercoaster the most realistic I can. The only problem I think I may find with using this method of texturing for my rollercoaster will be the rendering time. This scene took quite a while to render and was only one frame. If I’m creating a 60second animation and each frame takes as long as this did then it will literally take forever! I will have to use what I have learnt and practise it to see how I think it will be best to do my rollercoaster.

3ds Max Seminar 4

I feel I have been progressing in 3ds Max reasonably well and even though my figure is really basic it is a good start. Now I have learnt the basics during the seminars I am planning to start using other tutorials and create things of my own so that I can develop my skills further and start thinking about the realistic outcome for my avatar. I will develop on this figure to make a complete person and hopefully will be able to include a bit of detail in it also.

I really enjoyed the seminar today and found it extremely useful learning elements of 3ds Max. I had looked at the programme before the seminar so had an idea of the layout and tools you could use but so many of the tutorials I found online were really complex so I struggled with them. Today we used the text tool and extruded it to make it 3-d. We were then able to animate the wording to jump up and land again boucing as it did. This was a lot easier than I was expecting and realised that once I have a shape modelled out, simple animation is very straightforward. This is the first programme that we’ve used so far on the whole course which I have felt so positive about after the first use. Usually I have the lesson time and barely get anything done and am scared to try again as it was so difficult. However, I definitely feel confident enough to play around with the programme more and create some more basic animation.
